I have been using Wix for over five years and have built over fifty websites. One of the most popular questions I get from using Wix is, “can you code using Wix?”.
In this blog post, I intend to answer that question as closely as possible and hopefully help you determine if Wix is the right tool to build your website.
First, we have to get something straight. I like to think of Wix as having two sides to it. You have the classic Wix builder and the Editor X. We will cover both in this blog post.
Can You Code With Wix Classic?
The classic Wix Builder has minimal coding abilities. There is a bottom section in the Wix classic builder where you can add commands using Javascript code.
Additionally, you can add code packages using the header on the left. These are node.js packages that come from npm.
There is also an option on this header to connect your website directly with Wix’s databases.
Most of the time I do not do much coding using Wix’s classic platform since I find it very chunky and difficult to do anything complicated with. With that being said, if you need a very nice-looking website with limited amounts of code then this is the perfect builder for you.
Can You Code With Editor X?
Wix’s Editor X far surpasses the classic Wix builder and gives a lot more options for developers who are more comfortable coding.
As you can see from the screenshot above, the entire page is different from the classic editor view. In Editor X, you have the option to add GitHub code or custom code. You also have the option of adding API
With all of the new coding elements, there are still some functions that are the same as in the classic editor. For example, the Javascript code at the bottom of the page allows you to post Javascript code and enact commands on your website.
It should be noted if you are interested in Editor X to code with then you will have to click the ‘Dev Mode’ in Editor X. This unlocks the ability to do different coding using custom code.
If you would like to try Editor X then dive in and start playing around. Editor X will take a little time to get used to. Once you are using Editor X it is a strong platform to start building your websites.
Who Should Use Wix To Code?
If you are looking for an information page that just needs to give information to a user then the classic Wix editor is perfect. But if you are working on creating a more complex website that needs interaction with the user, then Editor X should work for you.
Either way, take some time and sign up for Wix. Perhaps your next coding effort will be done on Wix.
